Intro
The 2018 WomDomNom was a phenomenal success. No matter how good our organisation, there will always be ways to improve. It is important to focus on the things that worked and look at ways that we can improve to make the paeddle even more enjoyable for not only the padders, but also the committee. This newsletter is broken up by day and by key areas. One option is to discuss "What worked well" WWW and "What could be better" WCBB.
Pre paddle
Paddling Shirts
WWW
* Quality high quality
WCBB
* Order in September and segregate and lable shirts that have been ordered by paddlers as some small ones were bought on the day leaving those that had ordered one to miss out.
* Ensure no-one that is not a "Yellow Shirt" wears a yellow shirt - this may have to include River Canoe Club member shirts.
* Possibly get "WOMDOMNOM" printed down the sleeves - not covered by lifejacket and more easily identifiable
WWWW
Mowing of reserves
WWW
* The reserves were easy to access
WCBB
* Ensure Council are given booking forms as soon as dates are set.
* Ask Council to spray for cat heads during the year.
* Have a "Council Pack" - much like we have for support crew etc.
Pre Sunday Working Bee
WWW
* Were able to determine what we would need for the paddle, then place on shelving to be placed into trucks on Tuesday.
WCBB
* There was a lot of sorting through gear that ideally will not have to be done into the future. Catering need to pack their pantec so that they know where their gear is located.
Tuesday packing of trucks
WWW
* Most things were placed into trucks.
WCBB
* Determine when things will be needed as quite a bit of resorting on Thursday morning. Put eskies into Fridge Truck. Non perishable s and tables into "Green Shirt" truck and committee camping gear straight into luggage truck.
* Maybe we do not need the two (2) luggage trucks until Thursday morning, so pick up late Wednesday (by Rotary) and driven down on Thursday morning at 5am - would save a day's rental.
Ordering of food
WWW
* The pre order of food "Mick and Paul's" worked extremely well - quality was high and we could send anyone to pick up.
* Having catering size cans form Midwest Foods worked well - eliminated a great deal of rubbish.
WCBB
* Set up an account with IGA West Dubbo, Mick and Paul's, Midwest Foods
* The variety of drinks could be better - use Midwest Foods for alcohol as well, or maybe go with Dan Murphys.
Hertz Trucks
WWW
* The fridge truck was great once again to keep things cold. The two luggage tricks and ute were also good.
WCBB
* Have two (2) trucks assigned to luggage only.
* Have one (1) truck assigned to the "Green Shirts" - tables, chairs and things that do not have to kept cold.
* Have a designated driver for each vehicle per day and two (2) spare.
Dam Wall to Wellington Paddle
WWW
* The checking of boats in Wellington before they were put on trailers.
* The "Live Better" bus.
* Having breakfast out at the Dam.
* Lunch provided by the Red Cross.
* Paddler introductions before we paddled off.
WCBB
* More assistance from the Wellington Kayak Club and Wellington local people.
* Wholemeal and multigrain bread
Launch Dinner - "Cow and Calf" Hotel
WWW
* Great opportunity for paddlers and support crew to get to know each other.
* Yellow Shirt team and Red Shirt team met and organised their respective plans
WCBB
* Ensure all committee members are able to get to the function on time.
* Have a "garlic bread, main (4 drop), and dessert" available for $30 - place order at rego time. Served at 7pm (6pm and 8pm option for those that notify us that they require dinner early, or are running late).
* Give out shirts.
* Get paddlers to sign "Single Event Insurance" forms OR even better if possible - include in rego process
* Give padders and crew the opportunity to introduce themselves for 30 seconds.
The start - Thursday morning
WWW
* Having the toilets on the other side of the road.
* Having the luggage truck away from the food area.
* Great support by St Mary's Wellington.
* Acknowledgement of Country and blessing of the fleet by Father Carl Mackander.
* Having a map of the start area drawn up prior.
* Having a PA system and speeches and briefings
WCBB
* Have two (2) designated luggage trucks for paddlers.
* Ensure all bags weigh less than 20kg (advise in guide and newsletters) - have scales and weigh heavy ones. Have spare "Vinnies" bags for people to redistribute belongings, or get those that have these bags on "pack the truck duty".
* Have a designated "Green Shirt Truck".
* Set up breakfast like we did Days 2, 3 and 4 - two tables together (cereal, hot food, toast, tea and coffee and juice, as well as a "snack area" - muesli bars, fruit, water, gatorade, lollies etc for people to get for the morning paddle).
* Do not start serving breakfast until 7.30am.
* Set up long tables for people to sit down - have enough tables for everyone to sit down - on the sealed path that runs through "Oxley Park" - may mean buying an additional 30 tables - transport these in the "Green Truck".
* Get paddlers to use their camp chairs at the start and then place next to the "Green Shirt Truck" for transportation.
* Give maps for "Cale Oval, Narromine" to people moving their cars.
* Have the "Fridge Truck" packed with all breakfast gear on Wednesday.
* Some paddlers weren't comfortable with a religious blessing - maybe have a Traditional Owner?
Checking of boats
WWW
* Great work done by the "Yellow Shirt Team"
WCBB
* Provide Safety Co-ordinator with rego list well in advance so that inappropriate boats can be identified and paddler contacted in time by Yellow Shirt team
* Add tie downs and tow point to scrutineering list
Morning Tea - Day 1
WWW
* Great laminations, muffins etc.
* Having toilets.
* Plenty of Fruit and drinks and nit bars on offer
WCBB
* Better coordination of the boats at the "easy access point", so we don't have to use the steep access point - maybe the first boats in are the fastest? Maybe they need to take their boats up the bank a bit and leave room for the next boats to be placed? Maybe the fast boats are he last ones out and paddle through group. Are there any major hazards/back ups between morning tea and lunch?
Lunch - Day 1
WWW
* Great variety from the Red Cross.
* Location is shady and easy to access.
* Plenty of Fruit and drinks and nit bars on offer
WCBB
* Four (4) additional toilets.
* Ensure we get paddlers off the water who are starting to struggle.
* Have wholemeal and multigrain bread instead of white - the vast majority of WDNers are into being healthy
Afternoon Tea (Peach Trees) - Day 1
WWW
* Great to have St John's there in case of an incident.
* Location is easy to access.
WCBB
* Ensure we get paddlers off the water who are starting to struggle - the last 8km can be hard.
Camp Site - Day 1
WWW
* Location is shady and easy to access.
WCBB
* Have a map of the location with everything noted so set up can be done more efficiently.
Dinner - Day 1
WWW
* The salads were fantastic.
WCBB
* Have a cold dinner - ham off the bone, chicken, vegetarian slices etc.
* Have salads brought out from Dubbo, pre made.
* Have pre-dinner drinks at 6pm, any announcements at 6.20pm, dinner served at 6.30pm, clean up at 7.30pm, safety and first aid briefings delivered and highlights on side of truck at 8pm
Wash up - Day 1
WWW
* Hot water was again excellent.
WCBB
* Have 10 designated washing up people - two (2) teams of 5.
* Have a rinse tub, slightly away from the washing up station, so that plates etc that appear at the wash station are ready for wash and rinse.
Drinks - Day 1
WWW
* The drinks were always cold.
* paddlers were notified they had to pay for drinks at end
WCBB
* More variety, maybe Gin and Tonics, champagne.
* Have a bar person so that eskies are not opened and closed etc.
* Potentially use Dan Murphy's for increased variety and lower prices.
* Swap some soft drinks out for juices/healthy options
On water - Day 1

WWW
* Quality high quality
* The "Live Better" bus.
* Having breakfast out at the Dam.
* Lunch provided by the Red Cross.
* Paddler introductions before we paddled off.
WCBB
* More assistance from the Wellington Kayak Club and Wellington local people.
* Wholemeal and multigrain bread
* Give out shirts.
Morning Tea - Day 1
WWW
* Great laminations, muffins etc.
* Having toilets.
WCBB
* Four (4) additional toilets.
Dinner - Day 1
WWW
* The salads were fantastic.
On water - Day 1
WWW – General for whole paddle:
* Yellow Shirt team starting to be organised 5 months before event. Selected based on skills and attributes. Training provided. Pre-event comms re responsibilities, roles, equipment required. Well equipped with comms and safety gear.
* Pre event safety comms to paddlers.
* River Safety meetings every night (Yellow Shirts and First Aid) – to debrief on day, discuss improvements, plan the following day
* Feeding back decisions and key points for paddlers from these meetings into the safety briefings to paddlers
* Tail End Charlies (TECs) - well equipped and skilled
* Having Land Crew able to pick up paddlers getting off the water early - fantastic
* Having Catering team being able to provide breakfasts early – on time for our early starts - fantastic
* Paddle instruction by Yellow Shirts to slower paddlers was great
* No one on the water till Captain Nev is on (something we implemented after a paddler drifted down Butlers Falls after lunch on Day 2). Possibly need to enforce this more though.
* Paddlers learnt and did of own accord – single file, 10 secs apart. Especially great at Boral Bridge – no YS stationed there.
* Minimal capsizes – only 5-10% of last year
* Paddlers appreciative of Yellow-Shirts at rapids – many thankyous received.
* On-water First Aid team wearing Red Shirts; well-equipped first aid kits
* Having St Johns Ambulance on land
WWW – Day 1 specifically:
* YS paddled off before main pack – those that had to catch bus had boats set up ready to go before getting on bus
* Set-up at all rapids great - Rapids 1, 2, 3, playground and Ponto all fantastic set ups, only couple of capsizes. All YS except one dropped off at rapids - perfect.
* Good comms between YS without lots of radio use
* safety briefing written on truck door
* All capsized paddlers did have or were offered by YS/RS change of clothes or jacket
WCBB – General for whole paddle:
Pre event:
* Providing Safety Coordinator with Beginners phone numbers 3+ months in advance, so can contact enough in advance for people to attend RCC training days etc. 'Beginner' option in regos to come with the clause that you must no longer be a beginner by the time of the event - ie train!
* Providing Firts Aid co-ordinator with the rego s that said they had first aid cert 2+ months in advance
* Order a debit card for First Aid delegate and Safety Coordinator to share – they have lots of purchases to make
* safety comms – Andy Singh’s newsletter plan plus update and enhance website
During event:
* Designated Emergency Contact person for the event to be contactable by phone or radio at all times during paddle
* Have club boats available (with rudders) to swap out dodge boats (we did use one club boat for this on day 4)
* Leave Western Paddlers trailer (if borrow again) in Dubbo or somewhere more accessible than Narromine
* bottlenecks/queues at rapids where just after MT/lunch (MT & lunch Day 1, Lunch Day 4) + weirs
* YS to point rather than say Left/Right - where possible. Let paddlers know it will be their/river Left and Right.
* Tail End Charlies/Sweepteam:
· - Beach patrol to get everyone on the water in a reasonable time, not too far behind the front of the pack. Process:
- Briefing: paddlers are informed how many minutes they have between Cap’n Nev/Lead Paddler departing, and when the TECs/Sweepteam will depart
- Cap’n Nev/Lead Paddler uses air horn to signify the Lead is departing.
- TECs sound a 5-minute call with airhorn, and again as they leave.
- Anyone not ready should be left behind. Rename TECs as “Sweepteam” to reiterate this, plus anyone who cant keep pace with the Sweeps has to pull out at the next stop (the TEC’s diplomatically did this, with feedback from them being that otherwise some paddlers would still be paddling to Narromine).
· - Land Crew to assist with preventing anyone leaving after TECs have left.
· - Have minimum of 2 Sweeps, 3 if resources available. For towing and all sorts of issues that need to be mopped/swept up. TECs train with loaded boats.
· - Orange arm band to identify Sweepteam.
WCBB - Day 1 specifically:
* 3 days to go newsletter to communicate weather forecast. This was done on fb but don’t know how many people saw it.
* Pull out option at lunch and arvo tea, based on weather forecast.
* Have slow paddlers get on water among the first paddlers – make it clear they do not need to help with pack up
Friday
Breakfast - Day 2
WWW
* Great variety.
* Set up of tables worked well with the 4 stations.
* Toast was a welcome addition.
WCBB
* Even more toasters.
* Have consistent slow cookers - Breville brand with steel insert that can be placed on BBQ's to warm things if need be.
* Need "Station Controller" to ensure things do not run out - bread, milk, yoghurt etc. Purchase more multigrain bread - it ran out first - most popular
* Have muesli bars out, available for paddlers to take in boats - on all days, but especially Day 2 (longest day). Allow for 2-3 per person per day; any excess at the end can be sold off.
* PNSW Single Event M’ship forms available for paddlers joining in IF cant do online as part of rego process
Packup - Day 2
WWW
* The luggage worked well.
WCBB
* The Green Shirts need around 20 paddlers who paddle off a little later - 20 minutes, who have the ability to catch up. These paddlers will be hand picked and be quick paddlers.
* Start organising Land Crew 5 months in advance, so that we have more Land Crew and are less reliant on Paddlers to pack up.
* One Land Crew person dedicated to ensuring no-one leaves after Sweepteam have left
* Have two (2) designated luggage trucks.
* Have a 20kg bag limit.
* Chairs put in the "Green Truck".
Morning Tea - Day 2
WWW
* Great variety from the Red Cross.
